How to find orphan pages and what to do with them

Orphan pages are pages on a website that are not linked to by any internal links. Previously, they were considered a minor technical flaw in internal linking. In 2026, especially after a series of major Google updates in February and March, each isolated piece of content becomes a weak link that lowers the overall potential of the web resource. Of course, this can be fixed by simply adding the page to a category or with one link from any other post to it. However, I have found more effective strategies that not only eliminate the problem but also turn it into a strong booster for other articles.

What are orphan pages on a website

Orphan pages are URLs that are not linked to by any other page on the same website. They may exist on the server, be listed in sitemap.xml, even have backlinks and rank in search results. But due to the lack of internal links, neither visitors nor search bots can find them during normal navigation directly on your web resource.

To better understand, imagine a house with 5 rooms: each has recently been renovated, equipped with expensive modern appliances and furniture, but one of them was forgotten to have a door installed. Technically, the room exists, but it is impossible to enter it from other rooms. You can look in and even get to it through a window, but not everyone wants to do that.

This creates a negative impression of the homeowner: either they were careless about the renovation, or they deliberately hid the room, which looks suspicious. The same impression arises for your audience, search engines, and artificial intelligence. They want to see an authoritative source of information with a strong interconnected structure, instead they get a web resource where some URLs are connected, while others live their secret life like that isolated room.

Why do orphan pages appear on a website

Dropping out of pagination, filtering errors, changing URL structure, technical limitations, classic exclusions from categories — these are the most common reasons for the appearance of orphan pages. If they previously appeared due to the inattention of a developer or content manager, now problems more often arise due to automated website management.

Why orphan pages appeared on the website

So let's consider the reasons for the appearance of orphan pages on the website specifically in 2026:

  • infinite scrolling — if JavaScript loads content dynamically without unique links for each piece of content, the search bot does not receive URLs to follow, and these pages remain unreachable;
  • filters without navigation — if your product filtering system generates unique URLs that are not anchored in navigation, it creates "black holes" in the site structure;
  • incorrect testing — test pages or landing pages for A/B tests without noindex tags lead to the accumulation of junk content;
  • failed migration — during a move to a new content management system, some materials may become disconnected from their categories, accordingly, they remain in the database, but links to them disappear;
  • structure change — the site owner decides to get rid of a large number of categories or subcategories, deletes them, but forgets to transfer product cards or posts;
  • automation errors — you set up complex automation for generating and publishing content through Zapier, Make.com, n8n, Relay.app, or Activepieces, but forget to specify categories for new materials, automatically adding products to "Uncategorized" or experiencing a failure, and even with prior setup, new materials are not linked to the specified categories;
  • temporary promotions — the online store owner added a page for an advertising campaign in Google Ads, and after the promotion ended, removed the link from the homepage, but forgot to delete the page itself or close it with a noindex tag.

Then another question arises: to avoid orphan pages, is it enough to properly set up and control the linking to categories? Theoretically yes, but even with a selected category, a page can become an "orphan".

Content marketer Bohdana Haivoronska explains this using the example of Cityhost:

Imagine that we write a new article about renting a dedicated server in Germany and link it to the appropriate category, which will not be displayed in the menu and will not be linked to other sections. Then both the category and the article will become an "orphan group". Or problems may arise due to deep pagination: we assign a category, but then write another 1000 articles, then the material ends up on the 50th page of pagination. Google may find it if the site has a sufficient crawl budget, but on most web resources, pages with deep pagination are rarely crawled or not crawled at all.

How orphan pages affect website promotion

In the first quarter of 2026, search results once again faced incredible volatility, the key reasons for which were the March Spam Update and the March Core Update that began on March 24. According to research by SE Ranking analysts, this is one of the largest volatile updates in recent times: 90.7% of pages in the TOP 10 experienced changes, while 79.5% of URLs changed in the TOP 3.

These updates once again demonstrated that Google uses a holistic approach, where the site structure is a confirmation of expertise and authority. Search engines want to see not web resources with separate pages that live on their own. They need reliable sources of information where each post or product complements another, thereby allowing the user to find everything they need.

Accordingly, orphan pages that do not receive internal linking weight are marked as insignificant, leading to serious consequences:

  • Complete absence or dropping out of the index. Even if a page was indexed, after the next update, it may completely disappear from the results due to a low assessment of its architectural significance.
  • Loss of crawl budget. In online stores with thousands of products, the bot spends time on a technical search for "orphans" instead of scanning new arrivals or current promotional pages. As a result — new products do not appear in search for weeks. And especially in online stores, especially with seasonal products, any delay leads to huge financial losses.
  • Diminution of the entire domain. A large number of orphan pages spoils the overall quality metric of the site. Google perceives such a resource as neglected, poorly structured, or technically faulty, which lowers the positions of even the main, linked sections.

And as usual, our article does not go without mentioning artificial intelligence. In 2026, the task is not only to rank in the list of links but also to be cited by an AI agent in a synthesized response. For this, it is important to have a clear logic: if the AI crawler found one page, it should easily transition to your other relevant materials. If important materials are hidden behind several clicks without links, they are practically invisible to artificial intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT Search or Google Gemini, as these models use the "knowledge graph" of the site to confirm the accuracy of facts.

How to find orphan pages on a website: modern methods in practice

In 2026, you can find orphan pages on a website using the classic method — the Screaming Frog SEO Spider with API. For regular monitoring, you can use Ahrefs and Semrush. For WordPress site owners, there are SEO plugins (Rank Math, Yoast) and specialized extensions (Link Whisper, OrphanPages).

So let's consider each method of finding orphan pages using my small site with 15 pages as an example. A little spoiler: by the classic definition of orphan pages — I have none, but according to modern methods of promoting internet projects — there are enough.

Check internal links through Rank Math SEO

I have been using Rank Math SEO plugin to optimize my English-language WordPress site for 1.5 years. Recently, the developers added the Link Genius module — an advanced tool for internal linking that provides a detailed report based on the analysis of the web resource and the ability to quickly add missing links.

Although advanced AI tools are only available in the paid version, you can find orphan pages on the site in the free version. In the admin panel, go to the Rank Math SEO section → Link Genius and select Orphan Pages.

How to find orphan pages on the site with Rank Math SEO Free plugin

In the screenshot, you see the presence of the Blog page in Orphan Page, although there is a link to the blog in the menu. This is explained by the feature of Link Genius: the plugin only analyzes those internal links that are placed directly within the text content of your page or post, ignoring navigation menus, footers, and side panels.

Thanks to this feature of the plugin, I learned that not only is there no internal link to the blog, but also to some articles in it. And this is a big problem: due to my own inattention, I am not only weakening the authority of these pages but also destroying the cluster approach, which is one of the most effective models for building thematic authority of an internet project.

How to find orphan pages with the Link Genius plugin from Rank MathIf you have the paid version of Rank Math SEO and also saw such a problem after analysis, then go to Bulk Update for quick addition of internal links to orphan pages. And for full automation, go to Link Genius → Keyword Maps, create a keyword map, and click Preview & Execute. Rank Math will automatically find relevant old posts and insert links to your orphan page, and will do this for new articles as well. If you are using the free version, you will have to do the linking yourself.

Free analysis of your site with Ahrefs Site Audit

Ahrefs is one of the best services with a huge set of tools for search engine optimization, competitor analysis, keyword research, internal and external linking. At the same time, it is one of the most expensive: from $129 (managing a maximum of 5 projects) to $449 (50 projects). However, for our task, the free version is sufficient, where you can add your site domain and work with your project without additional payment.

To find orphan pages on the site in Ahrefs Site Audit:

  1. Register and add a new project. You can use data import from Google Search Console or add the project manually.

How to add a site in Ahrefs to find orphan pages

  1. Once you add the site and conduct the first audit, go to the Site Audit → Page Explorer section.

Example of page research on the site in Ahrefs

  1. Click Links → Orphan Pages. I have no such pages, but if Ahrefs finds them on your web resource, you can analyze directly on the service or download the list of URLs by clicking the Export button.

And don't forget to set up error tracking, as Ahrefs by default classifies orphan pages as critical-level errors. For this, go to Projects manager → Site audit.

How to activate constant site analysis in Ahrefs

Here you can set up to receive notifications daily, weekly, or monthly. If you have the paid version, you will like the service even more: in April 2026, Ahrefs significantly updated the Always-on Audit (AOA) tool, which monitors the internet project in 24/7 mode, instantly notifying about errors.

How to find orphan pages on the site in Semrush

An alternative to Ahrefs for finding orphan pages on the site is Semrush. You can use the free version of Semrush: add the site, connect Google Analytics and XML Sitemap, run the audit. Then go to the Site Audit → Issues section and find orphan pages.

Finding and fixing orphan pages with the Link Whisper plugin

For WordPress sites, one of the best plugins for internal linking is Link Whisper. It contains a separate Orphaned Posts report that instantly shows all pages and posts without internal links. Moreover, it automatically suggests relevant text and pages from which you can quickly place links to these materials using artificial intelligence.

To find orphan pages with Link Whisper on a WordPress site:

  1. Go to the admin panel → Add Plugin, enter the plugin name in the search bar, and click Install Now → Activate.

How to install the Link Whisper Free plugin to find orphan pages

  1. You will be redirected to the registration page, where you need to enter and confirm your email, and preferably connect Search Console.

How to add a site in Link Whisper to track orphan pages

  1. Link Whisper will immediately analyze the web resource.

Example of site analysis with Link Whisper plugin

  1. You will be redirected back to the WordPress control panel with information about the status of pages on the site. If the service finds orphan materials, it will mark this as a critical error. This happened to me as well, so I click Review.

Managing pages on the site with the Link Whisper plugin

  1. In the Links Report → Orphaned Posts Report section, you will see all orphan pages. If you simply click on the name of the material, you will be redirected to its editing, if you click on the "+" in the Actions column — you can view links, edit, ignore, or delete the post.

Managing orphan pages on the site with the Link Whisper plugin

I looked at these suggested actions, went into the subsections View Post and could not understand — where is the option to automatically fix orphan pages with Link Whisper. I found out that in the free version of the plugin, the function of automatic or semi-automatic link insertion is completely blocked, so you need to pay for a Premium license: $82 for one site, $182 for 3 sites, $282 for 10 sites.

In the paid version, you will see an active link or "Add" button in the Inbound Internal column next to the number 0. This button starts AI scanning of the entire site, finds relevant sentences in other articles, and allows you to insert a link to this orphan with one click without opening other posts. In the free plan, only reports on their presence are available in terms of orphan pages.

How to find orphan pages with the free OrphanPages plugin

A free alternative to Link Whisper is the OrphanPages plugin. However, its only function is to find orphan pages. There are no detailed reports or automatic fixing.

Finding orphan pages in Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog is a program for conducting a comprehensive technical SEO audit of a web resource. You can find orphan pages by matching data from classic scanning combined with information you will receive after connecting through Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console.

API connection limitations in the free version of Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Important! Although the program provides a large number of functions for free, a paid license is required to work with the API (GA4, GSC, Sitemap) — from £199.

I only have the free version of the program. However, I analyzed the information from the official site and made a short step-by-step guide for license holders on how to find orphan pages in Screaming Frog SEO Spider:

  1. Go to Configuration → Spider → Crawl → check the box "Crawl Linked XML Sitemaps" (or specify the sitemap URL manually).
  2. Go to Configuration → API Access → Google Analytics → authorize → select your GA4 account → make sure to check the box "Crawl New URLs Discovered In Google Analytics".
  3. Go to Configuration → API Access → Google Search Console → authorize → select your site → check the box "Crawl New URLs Discovered In Google Search Console".
  4. Enter the domain in the field above → click Start → wait for 100%.
  5. Click Configure → Crawl Analysis → Start.

Now look at the results in different tabs:

  • "Sitemaps" → filter "Orphan URLs" (present in the sitemap but without internal links);
  • "Analytics" → filter "Orphan URLs" (receive traffic but without links);
  • "Search Console" → filter "Orphan URLs" (have impressions in Google but without links).

Next, you just need to export a single list by clicking Reports → Orphans → CSV. After that, use the report to fix orphan pages.

What to do with orphan pages on a website

In 2026, simply adding a link from the menu, footer, or sidebar is not enough. And you have seen this yourself in the example of analyzing pages with Rank Math SEO and Ahrefs. The best way to fix orphan pages is to make decisions based on their current state.

Integrate useful pages into the site architecture

If a page has impressions and traffic, or it is important from the perspective of the cluster approach, then it is enough to properly integrate it into the appropriate cluster. For example, let's take an article from my site about how to start meditating with mobile apps:

  • the main page (pillar page), from which I will link — a selection of meditation apps;
  • additionally, I will link to the ghost page from each individual review of the meditation app;
  • and definitely from similar informational articles about meditation that are needed to confirm my expertise in this topic;
  • from the orphan material itself, I will also add links to all thematic articles;
  • each link will have a corresponding descriptive anchor text, for example, "start meditating", not just "click here".

You can additionally place a link to the orphan page in the navigation menu, footer, and/or sidebar if it is an important category. Depending on the type of page, a link to it can be placed in the category archive, tag pages, related blocks.

Redirect traffic and authority from outdated pages

If the content is already outdated or similar materials need to be combined, while they have traffic and/or backlinks, it is better to set up a redirect. You can do this using SEO plugins, such as Rank Math or Yoast, or use a specialized free extension called Redirection.

How to set a 301 redirect from an orphan page in Rank Math SEO

So the process is as follows:

  1. Find a relevant replacement. Choose a similar article or category where the user will be redirected.
  2. Create a 301 redirect. Set up redirection from the old address (URL) to the new one.
  3. Delete the orphan page. Only after activating the redirect should you delete the old post in WordPress.

Before deleting the old material, I recommend opening it in incognito mode. If you are immediately redirected to the new post, then everything is fine, you can delete the old one.

Properly delete unnecessary orphan pages

If an orphan page does not receive impressions, traffic, backlinks, and does not even align with your current web resource development strategy, it is better to delete it completely. This way, search bots will not waste time scanning junk instead of important materials.

How to delete an orphan page with a 410 redirect in Rank Math SEO

It is better to delete unnecessary pages with a status of 410 Gone, which immediately informs bots: "The page has been deleted intentionally, it will never return".

If you have Rank Math SEO, do the following:

  1. Go to the Redirections section.
  2. Click Add New.
  3. Immediately in the Redirection Type block, select the option 410 Content Deleted.
  4. In the Source URLs field, paste the link of the old page.
  5. Click Add Redirection.

Status 410 clearly indicates that the page is gone for good, which helps the index clear faster. Just don't forget to remove the URL from the XML Sitemap. But I emphasize: this method should only be used for completely unnecessary materials!

How to avoid the appearance of new orphan pages on a website

To prevent the appearance of new orphan materials, I recommend implementing a simple rule: each new page should have at least one incoming link from a thematic page. That is, immediately after publishing the material, you find similar old posts, go into each one, and place a link to the new one.

And of course, regularly conduct audits. If you have a web resource with a large volume of publications, then check for orphan pages monthly, if it is a small project with episodic publications — every three months. After major changes, migrations, or redesigns — immediately conduct a full analysis of the web resource.

So you can confidently proceed to fix orphan pages. And after making changes, implement a new content strategy and regular site audit that will help avoid the appearance of orphan pages. Moreover — meet the modern requirements of both search engines and artificial intelligence systems.
