The new year will bring changes and updates to Ukraine's domain system.
Termination of New Domain Names Registration in Russified Zones
Starting January 1, 2025, the registration of new domain names in the cherkassy.ua, uzhgorod.ua, zhitomir.ua, lugansk.ua and zaporizhzhe.ua zones will cease. This is part of the domain derussification process, which has intensified since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion.
It is important to know that the termination of registration does not imply a complete shutdown – owners of existing domain names in the specified zones can continue using them and paying for service renewal.
In 2024, the registration of new names in five Russified domains was halted, marking the important step toward their eventual elimination. Before that, in 2023, two old domains of the city of Dnipro (dnipropetrovsk.ua and dnepropetrovsk.ua) were decommunized and also closed for registration. In the future, all domains with city names transliterated from Russian are expected to be phased out.
Instead, users are encouraged to register equivalent domains in the correct Ukrainian-language zones: cherkasy.ua, uzhhorod.ua, zhytomyr.ua, luhansk.ua and zaporizhzhia.ua.
Price Increase for Domain Names in Several Ukrainian Zones
Additionally, starting January 1, 2025, administrators of several domain zones will increase the cost of registration and renewal in the following zones:
- National domain: .ua
- Generic domains: com.ua and net.ua
- Cherkasy and region: ck.ua, cherkasy.ua, cherkassy.ua
- Zhytomyr and region: zt.ua, zhytomyr.ua
- Kyiv and region: kyiv.ua, kiev.ua
- Poltava and region: poltava.ua, pl.ua
- Zakarpattia and Uzhhorod: uzhhorod.ua, uz.ua, zakarpattia.ua
- Ivano-Frankivsk and region: ivano-frankivsk.ua, if.ua
- Chernihiv and region: chernihiv.ua, chernigov.ua, cn.ua
- Donetsk and region: donetsk.ua, dn.ua
- Kharkiv and region: kharkiv.ua, kharkov.ua, kh.ua
- Luhansk and region: luhansk.ua, lg.ua, lugansk.ua
- Sumy and region: sumy.ua, sm.ua
- Zaporizhzhia and region: zaporizhzhe.ua, zaporizhzhia.ua, zp.ua
- Lutsk and Volyn: lutsk.ua, lt.ua, volyn.ua
This price increase is not an initiative of Cityhost or any other registrar - domain zone administrators made this decision in connection with the increase in prices in Ukraine for all goods and services, which, accordingly, increases the cost of maintaining domains.
The price increase will be approximately 25%. Be sure to register or renew your domains before January 1, 2025, to secure the current pricing.
